2011 was a very special year for Atlantic salmon on the Main
Southwest Miramichi River. In our privately owned pools, more fish were hooked than in any comparable time in the past 50 years. More than 95% of these fish were released. Perhaps the early
ice-out, or perhaps the relatively high water levels and low water temperatures were responsible for the great year. Surely, conservation efforts by the Miramichi Salmon Association and the Atlantic Salmon Federation fostered this exceptional salmon season.
In 1946 our family began hosting Atlantic salmon anglers on the Maine Southwest Miramichi River in Howard, New Brunswick, Canada. Our primitive four bedroom cedar lodge was replaced with a new five bedroom cedar lodge in 2008. We added an A-frame log cabin with a sleeping loft near Washburn’s Island in 2009 and a traditional two bedroom cabin on the Cains River in Shinnickburn, NB in 2010. Our private pools include Vickers Bar, Johnson’s Rock Pool, Horseshoe Pool, Washburn Pool, and the Brophy Pool.
Our anglers at the home pool lodge have their meals prepared by our excellent cook, Patricia Duffy. Anglers leasing our Washburn’s Island or Cains River cottages prepare their own meals.
At our facility, you will fish when you wish and have meals when you wish. We listen to you! Our private pools are only a few kilometers from our front door. The pools have a gravel bottom and are easy to wade.
We provide traditional, professional, personalized service in the peaceful, secluded surroundings of the Miramichi and Cains River valleys. We hope you will join us in 2012!

Spring Salmon: April and May
During this period, a majority of fishing is done from a boat. 8.6 ft or 9 ft. fly rods with sinking lines or floating lines with sinking tips are commonly used. Brightly colored streamer flies(for example the
Renous Special, Golden Eagle, Mickey Finn) are usually good choices. The ability to fly cast is not an essential ingredient for successful fishing.
Bright Salmon: June - October
During this period, most fishing is done while wading. Traditionally, the most successful anglers have worn chest waders, used an 8.6 ft or 9 ft fly rod with an #8 or 9# weight forward, floating line. The Green Machine, the Black Bear with green butt, the Curry's Red Shrimp, and the Ingalls' Butterfly are just a few of the productive wet flies. The Bomber, the Whiskers, and various Wulff patterns are some favorite dry-flies. These flies and many more are tied by the skilled craftsmen of the Miramichi Valley and can be purchased at the Lodge. Recently, the two-handed fly rod has gained in popularity. It has a distinct advantage in windy conditions with high water.
